Books Review: Michael Singer "The Untethered Soul" and "The Surrender Experiment"
"Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life." - Mark Twain.
I will be honest with you, I don't read too much. I could be better in this area. But some of the books that I have read, had a great impact on my life and my well-being. And I think the greatest books of all I have ever read were books written by Michael Singer.
Here is the link on review on my YouTube channel in case you don't have time to read this article:
I was working on my sewing project and listening to the podcast about surrender from life coach Glenn Ambrose. And in this episode he mentioned a book "The Surrender Experiment". I was not in the best place of my life back then and I decided to give it a try and to learn how to surrender. I went to Barnes&Nobles and started to read a book right there, to get the idea if I liked it or not. It was so interesting and funny (I love the funny part), it was so simple and so true that I borrowed the electronic version of it from Chicago Public Library right away.
In this book Michael Singer is sharing the story of his life. When he was young he noticed that he constantly was thinking about something, he realized that he had inner voice. And this voice was so annoying that he couldn't handle him and went to live to the woods and meditate. He promised himself that he will surrender to life's flow and will not listen to his annoying inner voice. And his life story proves that if you do that, you will become liberated and happy, and life will bring you everything you need. We got used to chasing happiness, but once you stop doing that you get everything you need!
When I finished reading "The Surrender Experiment" book I talked to Glenn Ambrose (life coach from the podcast that I was mentioning earlier), and he recommended me to read "The Untethered Soul". As I liked Michael Singer's writing style so much I got his second book without thinking! "The Untethered Soul" was written before "The Surrender Experiment". And it is more focused on theory rather than true life story. I am glad that by the time I started with "Soul" I already knew that author of this book had such an amazing life experience!
"The Untethered Soul" helped me so much! I was going through a lot of suffering when I got this book. I was in love with a man and I couldn't get him (I am still in love with him, I think this love is my biggest life challenge). We all suffer if we cannot get something we desire the most. But this book helped me to believe that I am in control of my mood, my well-being and that my happiness doesn't depend on external things. And it explained it so well!
I love the chapter "Pain is the price of freedom"! Michael says that if you are not afraid of pain, you become liberated. And it is so true! We worry so much that something bad will happen that these worries ruin our life even if nothing bad happens! Like Mark Twain once said: “I've lived through some terrible things in my life, some of which actually happened.”
We all have mind and mind's job is to worry. But do we really need to listen to its worries all the time? There is a conscious part of you out there, which can decide if you need to pay attention to some thought or you don't. And if you stay conscious as much as you can, if you learn how not to be a slave of your own ego, you will be free! All you need to do is to build up this conscious part the same way as you can build your muscles.
Later I found some audios about "The Untethered Soul" on YouTube and I also purchased some of audios online. It is not an ad or something, I honestly believe that Michael Singer's ideas are extremely helpful! I thanked God a lot of times that he gifted me Michael's books and audios! I swear he got me out of the horrible nightmare. By nature I am a super sensitive person. My dad used to call me "a wet eye" when I was a child because I was crying too often. And sometimes I have very bad, very mean thoughts in my head. These thoughts can be very-very painful. But when I learned how to separate my consciousness from my mind, which creates suffering with its fears, I felt much stronger. I am still on my way to liberation. And I am planning to start a new project related to that on my social media profiles. I hope it will help someone in future.
I think how interesting it is that God always gives us what we need in order to come through the difficulties, if we are looking for his help. We can ask for one thing and don't get it. But instead he sends us something even more valuable, something that we wouldn't even know about! Something that will help us for the rest of the life and maybe even next life, ha-ha.
So surrender to life and make your soul untethered!
