Baby Steps Toward My Dream!
Hi Everyone! I am so excited! Today I tried on my first bodice moulage and it fitted me really well! Yay!
Now if you don't know what am I talking about, I will try to explain.
My dream is to create my own garments, my own very unique designs! I am very petite and it is hard for me to find the right fit sometimes. About a year ago I started to sew by myself. And I thought that sewing would help me to solve the problem of fitting for me. But unfortunately I was wrong. The majority of the commercial patterns turned out to be very big for me, the same way as clothes in the stores. Some of the garments that I have sewn when I just started, came out too big. Later I had to adjust every single pattern that I used. And it was not easy and the result was not always perfect. It is easier to work with knits but, it is hard to make alterations to the patterns designed for woven fabrics.
At some point I got so tired of adjusting the commercial patterns that I realized that I need to learn how to draft my own. Thanks God there is plenty of information about it in Internet. I found a wonderful class on Bluprint or Craftsy which was called "Pattern Making Basics: The Bodice Sloper". It is taught by Suzy Furrer. She explains everything so perfectly! I could easily follow her instructions for moulage drafting. I haven't started the sloper itself yet, but I am super happy with the moulage results. You can see my video on my YouTube channel by following this link - How To Start Pattern-Making.
So basically moulage is your first pattern that you use as basics for everything else.
I have a lot of plans now. I picture so many designs in my head! I am so happy! Once I get my sloper I can change it anyway I want and the garments created based on this sloper will fit me perfectly!
Craftsy and Bluprint offer pattern-making classes for skirt, sleeves and necklines. I also want to learn how to move darts, because it helps to change the style of the garment dramatically.
If you are into creating your own clothes you might be interested in YouTube channel - Paukshte Fashion Workshop. The lady on this channel has tons of tutorials on how to create different designs. I am watching her channel on Russian, which has even more videos. But I think this one can be very useful also.
I know that making a moulage for someone is not such a big deal, but it is for me. To me it is not just a moulage, to me it is a baby step toward my dream! I know that in order to be successful you need to work hard, and you need to be very disciplined. I am working not just on my sewing skills, but on my habits and will-power. I am reading a book about self-discipline right now and will make the review about it when I finish reading it. Right now I can just say that the more I read it, the more I understand that my life is in my hands. Yes, there are a lot of things that I cannot change. But it is always my choice to complain about them, or work really hard on the top of my abilities to change the things that I have control of.
I know that God will help me to overcome all the difficulties, but I also know that I need to do my part of the work. I was given some talents and it is an insult not to use them. I am very thankful for everything I have in life and I want to show my gratitude every day!
I promise to make steps as much as I can! And I don't care how long will it take me to get there, I will always keep taking my baby steps :-)
