Goals and Habits.


Hi Everyone! I hope you are doing well! I was calm for the past two weeks and I am very happy about it!

Today I want to talk about goals and habits. I want to share with you my mistake and the solution that I found. I hope my story will help you with achieving your goals!

I have several major aims. I want to talk about two of them: writing and sewing. I want to publish a book and I want to create my own clothes.

If I want to put my design ideas from my head to the fabric and make real garments, I need to learn how to sew. I started sewing about 15 months ago, so I am pretty new to this area. And I know for sure that the more I sew the better I will be. In the beginning of February I decided that I should make one garment per week. And I started to work on a blouse (Butterick B6487).

Well guess what? I was not able to complete it on time! On the pattern envelop it didn't look too complicated. But when I started to sew it... Oh boy! I had to re-do my sleeves, adjust them, I had problems with gathering. The blouse had so many little details that I couldn't make it in a week. Last weekend I spent hours on this sewing project, I really wanted to stick to my "one garment a week" goal. But even thou I tried my best, I still failed. It took me 10 days to finish it.

I was upset, stressed and I haven't done other things that I was supposed to do last weekend, because of my unachievable sewing goal. And then I started to think about my writing system...

In writing I don't have any due dates, I don't have number of pages I need to write per day or week. For writing I just have my writing hour. This is the time when I turn off my phone, sit down, get very focused and just write. I do it every Wednesday after work. Of course I can make exceptions, couple of times I had to move my writing hour to other day. But I try my best to keep it on Wednesdays. Couple times a week I read children's books for 30 minutes (I am writing the book for kids, so I need to read about them). I found this system very useful. I can see how my book is growing and at the same time I don't get stressed.

So I started to think how dedicating specific time works better then deadlines. Sometimes I just don't know how much time will it take to sew the garment. I don't know how much time will it take to finish the book. I don't know how much time will it take for me to become a designer. But I know that if I do things related to my goals regularly, I will be walking towards achieving them and will be getting closer and closer.

And I will be able to develop good habits which will help me in a long run. Sometimes we achieve some goals and don't know what to do next. But you will always find what to do, if you have the habits of organized and hard-working person.

In the end of the day my main goal is to become the best version of myself. And I can only do that if I do useful things repeatedly. It is not only about achieving specific goal, it is about building the lifestyle.

Build your lifestyle, create your habits which will support your passion, your talents. If you spend time on achieving your goals, eventually you’ll get there!
