Steps To Happiness

I had such a wonderful week! And not because something great happened. I was just sitting at home and working a lot. Nothing exciting, but yet I was very happy. And today I want to share how I was able to stay happy even when I couldn't get what I wanted.

Here is the link to the video for today's article: Steps To Happiness.

I started to write my blog a while ago and I watched a lot of videos and read a lot of books about happiness. I keep collecting information about this subject. I was lucky enough to find an interesting movie "Happy For No Reason". I really liked it. In this movie they describe 7 steps you can take to make yourself happy. I am not going to talk about all the steps, but I want to focus on two of them.

1. Take responsibility for your own happiness. I think that without this step no one can be truly happy. You might be fine when things go the way you plan, but what if you cannot get what you want? If you rely with your happiness on something external, you will lose it sooner or later. On other hand, if you take responsibility for your happiness and you understand that it is your job to make you happy, you always win! I started to do a little trick every morning that I found extremely helpful: when I wake up, I promise myself that I will not get upset no matter what happens, I commit to myself that I will try my best to stay happy and peaceful. And it works! When I stop expecting anything from other people, when I let the world be the way it is, and just focus on my happiness, my state of mind, I can be happy no matter what!

2. Don't believe everything that you think. Our thoughts are based on our genes and our experiences. We perceive whatever we feel and make judgements and conclusions. But are they always right? Of course not! The thoughts generated by our genes can be absolutely unconscious and have no rationality behind. And our negative experiences can lead us to useless fears. Here is a simple example of how we can perceive things. Imagine that you have a really bad sunburn. You take a shower and it hurts. Does it mean that shower is bad for you? That it always be so painful that you should never take it again? No, but it feels this way. And if you don't have sunburn, you don't have this painful perception. So our experiences, our internal conditions generate the way we react to life. It means that you are the one who decides how to react and how happy you should be. And if your thoughts tell you that you should be unhappy, you can just ignore them!

I honestly think that when you believe that your happiness depends on you, you can be happy for no reason. I personally cannot get what I want most of the times. You can even call me a loser. The things that I want the most in my life, I cannot get. But I am definitely not an unhappy person. Because my happiness is independent from everything else. It is just there no matter how the things are. And this happiness makes my life very enjoyable and gives me a lot of energy. Please believe in your ability in making yourself happy and work on these things that I described.
