Communication and Values

Hi my dear readers! I love summer so much, going to the beach, taking walks, just being out is so nice. I hope you are enjoying your time too!

Here is the link to the video for today’s post: Communication and Values.

I am currently taking a course Storytelling and influencing: Communicate with impact. I find it useful and entertaining. And today I want to share a metaphor that I learned from this course. They say that people are like trees. What does it mean? Let me explain.

When you see the tree, you first of all see the leaves, they are not hidden, they are not very strong, and they hide other parts of the tree. Leaves are like our behavior. You can see how people act. And behavior can change sometimes. It is hard to keep it unnoticed. And we can judge people by their behavior. But I wouldn’t recommend to stop only on looking at peoples’ actions. In order to become a good communicator, you need to dig deeper.

The next thing you can see on the tree is brunches. They are partly covered by leaves and you cannot see them too clearly. And these brunches are our attitude towards behavior. What do we think about our own actions, do we regret about them, do we try to change something, to apologize when we make mistake. This attitude has some control on leaves and it is a little bit stronger, but still flexible.

Then you can also see the trunk of the tree. It is not that open, and at the same time much more stable. This trunk represents our beliefs. And as you already understood, our beliefs control our attitude and our actions. So if you want to influence people, it is important to see what they believe in. But even beliefs are not as hidden as…

Roots! Roots hold everything together. There is no tree without roots even thou we don’t normally see them. And roots are our values. Our behavior is growing from these values and if we want to change the behavior of ourselves or other people, we need to change the values. But first of all, we need to find them. Sometimes we walk around and don’t see our own roots, we don’t think about which things are important to us, we don’t notice how certain values control our choices. So it can be very useful to sit down and think of your own values, how they serve you. And in order to understand other peoples’ values I recommend to ask a lot of questions. The more questions you ask, the better you can see the roots.

I hope you found this information useful and that you will try to be understanding and curious about your roots and the roots of people around you!
